With the way things have been going in the world for the last couple of years we have wondered what would happen to conferences like E3. We recently saw news that E3 is cancelled for this year digitally and in person. We don’t yet know if it will make a return or not but if it doesn’t will things change that much for gaming companies?
With the pandemic effectively shutting down lots of events and then having to scale back its conferences to revolve around digital only appearances it looks as if ESA might have been having issues with keeping people interested. As a public show Sony and EA began to skip it due to having their own events, but maybe because of the difficulty of reporting during live events.
Covid showed people that the need for fully public events weren’t necessary and that is why groups started skipping it altogether. Indie companies would have to work with people digitally instead of physically and we have seen a lot of those types of games coming out even without E3. There are other conferences and shows out there that show the same types of previews and new technology so can we get along without E3? The answer is most likely yes, but we will wait and see what happens in 2023. This is what happened in 2021.
