Jaal Becomes Romanceable for Male Ryder in Mass Effect Andromeda

BioWare has published the patch notes for the next update to Mass Effect Andromeda. Male Ryders will now be able to romance Jaal, an addition coming directly as a result of player feedback.

Customization, Jaal & more

The patch also brings in a number of character customization options including two new heads (one male, one female). In addition, a new complexion option is available along with a wider range of skin tones. Lastly, all hairstyles are available for both sexes. A bald option has also been added.

For those who are still mid-game, the Tempest allows players to change their look using the new options.

Another key change in customization options is that dadRyder can keep his “iconic appearance” and not change based on a custom player Ryder.

For players gaming as Scott Ryder, Jaal is now a romance option. Prior to update 1.08, Jaal was a Sarah Ryder only option.

BioWare explained:

Scott Ryder did not have a same-sex squad mate available as a romance option, nor could the achievement for completing three romances be achieved with only male same-sex partners. And as the angara have expressed their fluidity in how they perceive gender, it seemed only natural that Scott could have a relationship with Jaal.

We understand that a character’s orientation is an important part of what makes them feel real. The relationships with your crew are some of the most loved and cherished parts of our games, so we wanted to make sure we got it right. We consulted with members of the LGBTQ community, both externally and within our own studios.

Lastly, a number of bug fixes and feature enhancements were applied to both single- and multi-player portions of the game.
