Know Your Lore: Destiny 1 and 2 Chronology and Plot Pt. 1

All the story you may have missed!
Destiny Part 1

Before joining the new expansion, I would like to pay attention to the Destiny story as a whole, to combine everything and try to put it on the shelves. Here I will briefly talk about the plot of the game, both the first part and additions and the chronology of the second. This is not a complete analysis, but rather a reminder and analysis for those who have played and abandoned or are playing but do not understand what is happening and why.

Destiny

It all starts at the cosmodrome, the former territory of Russia. And as expected, everything begins with death, namely its abolition. An unknown character (us) is resurrected by a certain Ghost who will be a faithful companion of this character for a long time.

Making his way through the crowds of the Fallen, our hero finds a ship and heads to the Last City, where he meets characters whose hands are the fate of mankind. The herald (the central figure in the hierarchy of government) tells our character that humanity is again in danger – Darkness, and we, as new Carriers of Light given by the Wanderer (a large sphere in the center of the city), must stand up for the remnants of civilization, and become the Guardian.

Traveling around the spaceport, we collect the necessary parts to improve the ship so that we can travel to all the planets, and we meet another of the main factions – the Hive. Collecting data throughout the cosmodrome, we find the goals of the Fallen – to steal the technologies hidden at the Cosmodrome, and we learn about another secret – the military AI Rasputin, which was created by mankind to protect against external threats, and he all the time held back the attacks of the Fallen, preventing them take possession of the weapons and technologies that are hidden there. And as it turns out, the Hive was there for the very reason that the Fallen were. Having broken through with a fight through both, the Guardian manages to activate the central transmitter antenna of the complex through which Rasputin restores a network of defense systems on different satellites and planets.

Destiny 1

After that, the mission at the Cosmodrome is considered complete, but the Vanguard of another power structure in the Last City has a new task, this time on the Moon.

On the moon, the hero is looking for the missing Guardian, who was looking for a passage to the Hive Fortress. Bad news awaits him: the Guard is dead, and the Hive, it turns out, is gathering an army and planning an attack on Earth. But the hero destroys the enemy’s communication system and at the same time interrupts the ritual with which the Hive tried to draw energy from the Wanderer. Here a new character enters the scene – Exo Stranger, who calls on the hero to go to Venus, after which she disappears.

On Venus, the hero faces new opponents – Vex with a collective mind. An unknown Exo girl gives a new task: to destroy the Black Garden – the city in which the Vex were created. For information on how to get to the Black Garden, the hero goes to the Awakened – a race of blue-skinned demi-humans who live and try not to get involved in galactic wars. The Awakened Queen Mara Sov agrees to help the hero if he can get her the head of the powerful Vex Gatekeeper. After destroying about a thousand enemies on Venus, the hero gets to this Guardian of the Gate, defeats him, and brings the head to the queen, who sends the hero to Mars, having previously said that he will have to arrive at their first call if anything happens.

On Mars, the hero fights new enemies – the Cabals. Here is the entrance to the Black Garden. On the way to him, the hero discovers that the military facilities of Mars, which should be controlled by the Martian artificial intelligence, are for some reason under the control of Rasputin. So far, the hero enters the stargate and finds himself in the Black Garden – a special place that is beyond our understanding of space and time. Making his way through the crowds of enemies, the hero discovers the Heart of the Black Garden. The hero destroys him, and at the same time several bosses, after which an unknown force returns the hero back to Mars. The Vex are defeated, and the hero listens to endless praise in his address. This ends the main plot of the game.

Destiny: Dark Below

After some time, Eris Morn, one of the longtime agents of Ikora Rey (Head of the Warlocks), appears in the tower. Eris has been watching the Hive for a long time and studying it not only by order but by necessity. Eris reveals that the danger of a relapse is growing by the hour, and the ritual of summoning Crota, the Hive Prince, begins on the Moon.

The main task was to defeat the hive commanders who help them in the call, but one of them escapes. And almost immediately attacks the Rasputin complex at the Cosmodrome. After defeating all the henchmen, the Guardian defends the complex, but one of the commanders escapes again, but not for long. The guard pursues the commander and kills him, and then immediately goes to the temple of Crota and interrupts the ritual. And the fate of Crota is already being decided in the raid “The End of Crota”, where he is killed by the guards.

Destiny: House of Wolves

Months later, the Awakened contacts the Guardian and reminds him that the Guardian is indebted to the Queen. And he is called to Venus to stop Skolas (the self-proclaimed Kell (leader) of the House of Wolves). The House of Wolves rebelled against the Reef, and many of the Queen of the Awakened Mara Owls’ subjects were killed by her former Fallen House of Wolves bodyguards when they tried to kill the Queen.

Outraged by their betrayal, Mara placed bounties on the traitors’ heads. She assigned Petra Venj (acting regent or commander) to work with the Guardian to hunt down the Wolves who had betrayed her, along with dozens of Wolf leaders who had escaped from the Prison of Elders. And on his way, the Guardian meets Variks, who has fallen, betrayed his people, and after explaining the actions of Skolas, we understand that he wants to capture absolutely all the houses and become Kel Kelov. And as it turns out a little later from the intercepted messages, Skolas is trying to use Vex technology to call the Fallen from different timelines.

And to prevent this, the Guardian goes with Vex to the stronghold on Venus, defeats Skolas, and surrenders him to the queen, wounded. Where his fate is already being decided in the Arena.

Destiny: The Taken King

Half a year later, the fleet of King Oryx arrives in the solar system, who wants to take revenge on the children of light for the death of his son Crota.

Eris Morn and Osiris (an old Warlock and former commander of the Vanguard who was exiled from the Last City due to his obsession with the Vex) ask Queen Mara for help, as she has a powerful army of Corsairs under her command. Mara agrees and takes the first line of defense and meets the Oryx fleet as they approach Saturn.

During the battle, Mara dies, her fleet is destroyed, her brother Uldren is missing. The Oryx fleet is paralyzed and unable to move beyond Saturn.

The Vanguard receives a call for help from the Cabals on Phobos, a moon of Mars. The Guardian goes there to find out why and meets with the Taken, who were created by Oryx. The Possessed are beings that are modifications of the Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal that have been corrupted by the Darkness. Not understanding what kind of creatures the Guardian escapes and having already discussed everything with the Vanguard, using stealth technology, he sneaks onto the king’s ship, arranges a diversion.

Eris Morn discovers that it is not enough to kill Oryx in our dimension, he must be killed on his own, created by himself. But in order to penetrate, a special key is required, which can only be obtained from the remains of Crota, the son of the king. After infiltrating the Oryx dimension, the Guardian defeats him and he flees to the Throneworld, leaving behind his sword.

And after already in the raid, a group of guards jointly kills Oryx by infiltrating the Throne World.

Destiny: Rise of Iron

The life of a guard is never calm: some problems are constantly looming on the horizon, just have time to reload the trunks. This time, the attention of the Tower, the last stronghold of earthlings, was attracted by the strange activity of the “fallen” – a race of four-legged space pirates – throughout the solar system. Lord Saladin himself, the only remaining representative of the Order of the Iron Lords, joined in solving the problem, protecting the peace of mankind until the appearance of the guards. This cannot be ignored, and therefore we are also hastily involved in the case.

The new expansion takes place in the Plaguelands, a long-abandoned region of Old Russia, occupied by the “fallen” and sinister nanotechnology called SIVA, which has not been heard of by the Vanguard. While pursuing the Fallen troops, also called Splicers, they are similarities between the bodies of the Fallen and the Splicers. And then we learn that the Iron Lords tried to master and enslave this technology and what it led to. Although this is found out towards the end, when the Guardian, having collected all the necessary data and fragments, penetrates the Rasputin complex that Siva had just enslaved, and destroys it by first defeating all the Iron Lords sealed in that complex. And after that, the Guardian becomes a “young Wolf”.
