inXile Entertainment has been hard at work recently. The news pour from the company about Bard’s Tale IV as well as Torment: Tides of Numenera (releasing tomorrow!). Now the team is back at it. The devs sent out word about newly announced VR Action RPG / Dungeon Crawler The Mage’s Tale.
What is The Mage’s Tale?
The events of the game are happening in the same universe as The Bard’s Tale. This time players are stepping into the shoes of an apprentice mage. Evil wizard Gaufroi kidnapped the player’s master, and the protagonist is determined to get him back. However, it might just be easier to say than do. To accomplish your goal, you’d need to get through 11 vast devious dungeons. The environments of which differ from sewers (why is it always the sewers?!) of Skara Brae to the tombs of Charm.
The game will toss puzzles, traps and mosters in your way. Each of which would have an easy time ending your journey if you’re not prepared. Sounds like the apprentice is at disadvantage here, huh? But our protagonist is not a simple barbarian, either. Conjure the raw power of the elements and blast your way through those who oppose you. Players can throw gouts of flame, spears of ice, artcs of lightning as well as cast raging tempests.
Geez, if an apprentice can do that, I don’t want to face the Master or the evil Wizard in combat… Which brings us to the next point: on your journey you will find ancient texts and master’s secrets scattered through dungeons. Add them to the special reagents and you’d be able to get even more exotic and powerful spells into your arsenal.
Brian Fargo, dungeon crawler expert and CEO of inXile Entertainment, noted about The Mage’s Tale:
When I was a kid our dungeons consisted of playing Dungeons and Dragons on graph paper. From there I graduated to playing classic computer games in black and white likeWizardry, which inspired me to create a full color dungeon crawl with Bard’s Tale. The window for the players kept getting bigger, the graphics more advanced, and now with The Mage’s Tale, we are inside the dungeon
So far there is little known about The Mage’s Tale. The game will be released later in 2017 for Oculus Touch.
