Wizards of the Coast surprised a lot of folks today with the announcement that Magic: The Gathering Arena will be launching on September 26th.  Launch day comes complete with the Throne of Eldraine” card pack that also includes new “special thematic battlefields”.

Players who take part in the open beta before September 26th will earn some goodies by way of thanks for their participation. These include a unique card back and the “Fblthp” avatar.

In addition to the launch announcement, WotC also revealed the new Brawl special event. This is a 1v1 game mode that will be available from now through September 9th. Players are allowed to bring one Legendary Creature of Planeswalker and 59 other cards into Brawl. Also during the event, players will be able to play and earn cards from the Throne of Eldraine pack “weeks before release”.
