If all things work out well, it’s possible that we’ll see Mario returning to the big screen in the future. According to the Wall Street Journal, Illumination Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Nintendo are in talks to bring a new film to life. The only other time that we’ve seen Nintendo’s signature character in the cinema was in 1993 and the Super Mario Brothers film with Bob Hoskins.
You may remember Illumination Entertainment as the folks behind Despicable Me and Minions, both very popular films that cross generational lines.
This is good news as the franchise is expanding well beyond games. Earlier this year, Universal announced it would be opening up Nintendo Land at Universal Studios theme parks. Attendees will see such iconic Nintendo IPS including Donkey Kong and Mario Kart. The first of these locations is set to open at Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan.
