Metal Unit First Impressions

As a Metal Unit pilot, you are tasked with capturing a traitor to your military. That traitor, your sister. Geared up with a sword, and some special abilities and weapons, you will take the fight to the enemy forces as you make your way to your sister. You will earn everything you get, and it will lead you to victory. Here are our impressions of Metal Unit.

A side-scrolling platformer with roguelite elements, Metal Unit is developed by JellySnow Studio and published by Neowiz. Currently, in early access, this title is one that gives you a real sense that the company is doing what they can to make it fun. The story elements are there, and the fighting system with all of the weapons and abilities are on point. To me, it felt like playing Megaman mixed with Metroid and Castlevania all in one.

I enjoyed the different weapons in the game, especially the different swords. Buying each different sword was like upgrading your whip in the Castlevania series of games, like Simon’s Quest, and it gives you a way to upgrade your character quickly. Alongside a simple stat system where you level up things like your health with earned points, you will enjoy playing the game. When you fight the enemies they all have health bars, so you will need to beat them up just a little bit, and then finish them off. This will make the boss fights a little more challenging but not impossible to finish.

When you die you lose everything except for the basic pistol and sword, but everything that you had gets turned into points that can be used later on with other items. So far the game has 3 main stages and story chapters opened up, with a whole slew of monsters and aliens to fight. You will be able to purchase and find hundreds of different weapons and items as you go throughout Metal Unit. Expect to have a lot of fun, and a bit of difficulty with some of the boss characters.

Overall, I have had so much fun with this game so far. It is still in early access on steam and they expect it to launch sometime toward the end of 2Q 2020. Currently, it is on steam for $14.99, but they plan for the price to change after early access has closed and the game has launched. If you want to get into the game on the ground floor and work your way towards launch then this is your chance. I have absolutely loved the story, and the gameplay so far.
