Monster Hunter World has been steadily beating Steam records: becoming the most successful Japanese game launch is no small feat. MHW has almost doubled the success of the previous record-holder, Dark Souls 3. However, things are not going as sunny in China. Tencent was ordered to remove Monster Hunter World from sale from WeGame platform.
The exact reason for the removal is not known, but according to MorningStar.com, the game’s portrayal of corpses might be to blame. This ordeal is a huge hit for both Capcom and Tencent: the companies had plans for WeGame to expand with MHW being the first game with simultaneous release both on the platform and on Steam.
If the problem really is with the game’s depiction of bodies, it wouldn’t be surprising to see MHW return to WeGame relatively quickly. Previously, the Chinese government has also blocked World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King due to the skeletons in the game, but shortly after allowed the game to return, following the changes to the in-game models.
