New Mana Console Game in Development

Square Enix held a terrific live stream event last week to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved Mana series of games. During the stream, viewers were taken on a nostalgia-filled trip down the franchise’s history and were treated to some exciting new announcements including the fact that a new Mana game is in development for consoles.

Here’s what we know from the stream event:

  • an anime based on the franchise is in the works
  • a free-to-play mobile title for both iOS and Android devices is titled Echoes of Mana
  • a new title is in development for consoles

Producer Masaru Oyamada said, “We wanted to announce it by running a cool trailer, but we’re only at the start of the 30th anniversary. But we are in fact developing [a new game]. Please wait a little while longer until the proper announcement. Although we did have [Mana creator Koichi Ishii] take a look at it a little bit ago. We’re at that [development] level, so please look forward to it. Development still has some way to go. We are developing for consoles, so I hope you can look forward to it.”

If anyone is hoping that the game(s) will be out soon, it’s probably a good idea to temper that hope with a cold dash of reality. Based on everything said during the event, it’s likely that both games are quite a ways off.

In the meantime, head to the official site for the Mana series.
