New Overwatch short story centers on Mercy ahead of Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2

With the announcement of Overwatch 2, Blizzard is ready to start revealing some of the stories behind the events players will find in the game. OW2 was announced at BlizzCon 2019 as a sequel to the original game but with more of an emphasis on cooperative PvE experiences for players.

The first foray into the motivations of the characters centers on Mercy, one of the series’ most iconic heroes. In “Valkyrie”, Mercy has left OW and has traveled to Poland, South Korea, and Venezuela. As she works in refugee camps, she mentions how she is now known “as Dr. Angela Ziegler. Not Mercy.” She mentions hearing from other OW members scattered around the world.

“I felt the echoes of Overwatch and my own guilt over the problems we had left behind when it had all fallen apart. Which is what led me to Egypt. Overwatch was responsible for much of the country’s suffering, and I needed to help repair it.” she writes.

The story offers a peek into Dr. Ziegler’s mindset as she considers returning to her friends and her role as Mercy. Read the story online or download it on the Blizzard site.

There is no word on when we might see OW2. Game director Jeff Kaplan has said that he has “no idea when” it will be released but that the game is deep in development.
