Paramount and Nickelodeon have announced that the next SpongeBob movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, will be skipping a theatrical release and will be heading to premium digital rental services in early 2021 instead. Shortly after its debut, the movie will become part of CBS All Access.
“We are thrilled to have ‘The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run,’ a premier, first-run movie from one of ViacomCBS’ biggest brands, join CBS All Access’ expanding slate of franchise content from across ViacomCBS. This launch will be perfectly timed with our continued expansion and planned rebranding of the service in early 2021, as we welcome SpongeBob and the gang from Bikini Bottom to the service in the biggest way possible.” said Marc DeBevoise, Chief Digital Officer at ViacomCBS, and President and CEO of ViacomCBS Digital.
The movie was originally set for a theatrical release on May 22nd but was postponed to August 7th due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
To get fans prepared for the movie’s upcoming release, CBS All Access will feature all available seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants”.
