Obsidian Working on a New Fallout? Signs May Point to It

OBSIDIAN - FALLOUT

If I were a betting woman, I’d say that Obsidian Entertainment might just be ready to announce a new Fallout game. Why? First off, the company has been active on Twitter with this little tease:

Secondly, the company released the results of a recent survey where players were asked about their thoughts on DLC. That in an of itself is fascinating. However, it is one of the questions that piqued our interest.

Here’s the question: Which of the following Obsidian DLCs have you purchased, either on their own, or as part of a Season Pass/Deluxe/Game of the Year Edition?

Respondents could tick as many as applied. Each of Obsidian’s games are listed and most fall into the 40% and below purchase range. EXCEPT…you guessed it: The Fallout series. Nearly 70% of respondents purchased every DLC.

It’s no surprise that Fallout: New Vegas, still one of our most popular games, remains the leader in terms of DLC ownership. We also had a significant number of respondents who owned DLC in Pillars of Eternity and, surprisingly, Neverwinter Nights 2, a game that’s now more than ten years old. Only about one in ten respondents did not purchase any Obsidian DLC at all.

It might be grasping at straws to assume that a new Fallout game might be announced soon, but from a purely speculative stance, it seems reasonable given the survey data. If a company understands that nearly 3/4s of all players will also buy all DLC…well, what’s not to like?

Other interesting tidbits from the survey include:

  • most respondents were male and from the US
  • the vast majority use a Windows PC on a daily basis
  • people want more game content and to see the game world grow and be longer to be able to return to it.
  • answers reflect that players want one or two big, deep DLC over lots of smaller ones
  • DLC is important to gamers

You can check out the survey on the company’s site.

What do you think of the results? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.
