RPG Watch came across an interesting bit of information earlier from an Obsidian forum member. According to the report community member and backer Prestidigitator unearthed a new, and unannounced, Trademark filing by Obsidian.
While digging around Justia, Prestidigitator found reference to a property called “The Outer Worlds”. The trademark filing itself covers games, computer games, trading card games, books, comics, and software for the IP. The only reference he found was to the first entry in a book series by UK author E J Gilmour. The forum poster pointed out that the association is pure conjecture and there are no disclosed ties between the two.
A little bit of digging on the Obsidian site shows they’re hiring several positions including “Senior Gameplay and AI Programmer”, “Senior Technical Artist”, “Level Designer”, and “Recruiter”. The postings don’t detail project specifics and could be for existing titles in production. It does however signal that the Indie studio is ramping up efforts for their projects.
The Outer Worlds, and information available, is just vague enough to generate speculation as to whether this is a new IP, or an expansion of their existing properties. Outer Worlds could imply a science fiction setting. What’s your opinion? Do you think this is something new Obsidian is developing, or do you think it might be tied to an existing property and an expansion?
