Once you’ve put the controller down who knows what happens to our favorite characters. Fans of the Oddworld franchise are about to find out as Oddworld Inhabitants has released a new gameplay trailer from the newest Abe adventure, Oddworld: Soulstorm.
The second entry in a planned pentalogy, this Oddworld sequel picks up after the end of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty. After freeing his subjugated workmates, overthrowing the corrupt RuptureFarms, and taking down Mollusk the Glukkon it is far from happily ever after for Abe and his associates. New ‘n’ Tasty may have concluded some years ago, and won critical acclaim when it landed on almost every imaginable format, but critical acclaim won’t feed hungry mouths. Oddworld: Soulstorm finds Abe and 300 free Mudokons adrift without an institution to feed or keep them. Lost and alone in the desert, the Mudokons do find solace but it comes in the form of a new brew and has far more insidious consequences than any shade of energy drink.
Just like New ‘n’ Tasty, Oddworld: Soulstorm is a platforming adventure that tackles themes of environmentalism, capitalism, consumerism, and addiction. As you can see from the teaser trailer, below, the same oddball humor and quirky aesthetic are looking even more polished than the last time Abe had an outing.
New ‘n’ Tasty’s reconstruction of the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. reignited interested in a franchise that dates all the way back to the original PlayStation release of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. If the teaser for Oddworld: Soulstorm is anything to go by, the franchise will easily make it through another outing, but will the Mudokons? Oddworld: Soulstrom is due out in 2020 and you can find out more at the game’s official website.
