It has been quite a while since Blizzard released their last short video for Overwatch. However, the company has no plans of abandoning them. During a New York City press event this week director Jeff Kaplan confirmed that more animated shorts are currently in development.
The Art of Animated Shorts
Jeff Kaplan explained his stance on the media:
The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making, We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay — we can tell any stories we want. We plan to tell more of those. We’re hard at work on more of those.
They take a long time. We think of them as in seasons. That’s how we talk about them internally. So our first season started with ‘Recall’ [the Winston short] and ended with ‘The Last Bastion.’
So far there have been 6 shorts: the 1st one, Recall, showed off conflict between Winston and Reaper which lead to Recall of Overwatch agents. The 2nd one, Alive, featured Widowmaker killing an omnic Mondatta while Tracer was trying to stop her. The next one, Dragons, starred Shimada brothers, Hanzo and Genji. Hero shows off how hard it is to get rid of old habits for ex-Overwatch agent Soldier 76. The Last Bastion explores the past of the loveable robot Bastion. The last one to date is Infiltration that was shown during Blizzcon, featuring Sombra, Reaper and Widowmaker trying to assassinate Katya Volskaya. Zarya also makes an appearance in the last short.
There is still quite a lot of characters whose pasts and motivations have not been tapped into. Who is it you want to have their own video? You can take a look at previous videos following the links above.
