PDXCon Spotlight – Battletech, Jon Schafer & Europa Universalis

PDXCon

PDXCon is underway with a number of big announcements across a variety of games. During the event, fans heard about all things Paradox Interactive and its games including Battletech and Europa Universalis IV. Oh and there’s this little thing called Jon Shafer joining the studio as well!

Fans and players can now take part in game-specific panels as well as larger, whole-group speeches. Add in a chance to get hands-on with some of Paradox’s newest games and it sounds like a fantastic weekend!

PDXCon – What we know so far

The publisher has a number of big announcements prepared including:

Battletech publishing

Harebrained Games and Paradox have announced that the two companies are working together to publish Battletech a brand new turn-based tactical mech game.

Game features include:

  • turn-based tactical combat
  • set in a universe constantly at war
  • noble houses use Battlemechs to fight one another
  • players command a mercenary squad
  • rewarding mercenary management
  • deep PvE story
  • PvP multiplayer

Battlemech will be released in 2017.

Civilization V Designer Jon Shafer  Joins Paradox

Jon Shafer is now part of Paradox Development Studio as the Game Director. His duties include working on new projects that will be announced at a future time. Strategy fans remember Shafer as an award-winning designer on Civilization V.

I’ve been a fan of Paradox’s games for years now,” said Jon Shafer. “I’ve been drawn to strategy games for as long as I can remember. I look forward to working on the next big title in their catalog – stay tuned!”

Shafer will also continue working on his KickStarter title, At the Gates. It is a project independent from his work at Paradox.

Third Rome – First “Immersive Pack” for Europa Universalis IV

Pack up your long underwear and get ready for a trip to Russia in Europa Universalis IV. During this weekend’s convention, Paradox announced that “Third Rome” is the first immersive add on to the game.

The new campaign takes players deep inside Russia along with region-specific content. With two unique governments, each including its own abilities, players will need to use diplomatic and military strategies to win.

Features include:

  • 2 new ranks of Russian government
  • patron saints that can provide bonuses
  • the Patriarch system
  • new soldiers
  • a new battle front in Siberia
  • new graphics suited to Eastern Europe
Surviving Mars

Lastly, Paradox introduces Surviving Mars, a new management strategy title that will be released on multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 4 and XBox One.

During the game, players build and manage a group of colonists trying to survive on Mars. It is up to players to build a colony as well as to keep their colonists healthy, sane and happy.

Game features include:

  • construct a colony and keep it supplied
  • find scarce resources
  • expand territory
