Play the original Diablo in your browser for devilish fun

Diablo

In a move we certainly didn’t expect this Wednesday morning, Rivsoft has announced that you can now play a truncated version of the original Diablo in your browser.

The company has ported the shareware version of the game called “Diablo Spawn” for browser play. It features “source code reconstructed” from the original 1996 game by Blizzard. Only one of the character classes is available in the shareware version as well as two dungeon locations.

Those who wish to play the full game version in a browser can do so, but must first purchase a copy of the full game from GoG.com. From there, the files can be dropped into the browser window to unlock the full game.

On Devilutions’ Github page, they provide extensive instructions for installation, the purpose, and the rationale behind the project and much more. Interesting, they also have this to say:

“In order to ensure that everything is preserved, Devilution keeps everything as it was originally designed. This goes as far as bugs and badly written code in the original game. With that, it serves as a base for developers to work with making it much easier than before to update, fix, and port the game to other platforms.”

If you’re ready to give it a go, head to Rivsoft’s page or to Devilutions’ Github page to read more.
