Atlas players have an entirely new map to explore thanks to the release of The Maelstrom for both PC and Xbox One. While generally a smaller map than some, it has been created so to “intensify exploration” and to simplify finding enemies or collaborators while sailing the high seas. This is part of the developer’s overall goal to augment seafaring exploration and combat to make it as exciting as completing activities while on land.
“Grapeshot Games has plans for regular content updates to the pirate MMO that will bring joy and piracy back to the lawless waters with schemes for Trade Winds, Farms, Warehouses, and more.”
The Maelstrom features a “circular pattern” that is considered higher in difficulty than other sea-borne maps. There are more lawless waters in the middle with players even being able to confront a Kraken if they’re (un)lucky. The edges are filled with additional resources for new pirates and the waters are a somewhat safer refuge for those just getting their sea legs. Lastly, resources have been sprinkled throughout the game world to encourage exploration. “No more homebodies. Players must venture out to find all their necessary resources”.
Players interested in purchasing the game can do so for $9.89 thanks to a 67% discount during the Steam Summer Sale.
