Quake Champions, the current iteration of the iconic FPS franchise just announced a throwback map to celebrate Quake’s 25th anniversary.
While many of you will be familiar with id’s DOOM series, Quake is an equally iconic first person shooter from the depth of PC gaming lore, and it turns 25 this year. To celebrate, Quake Champions, the online Quake shooter is adding a map that old school Quake players might recognize. The new, or old, map is titled The Dark Room, and is a replica of an original Quake deathmatch arena. The latest addition to Quake Champions was one of six original deathmatch locations in the first Quake, so it seems fitting that it retains a certain retro charm in this new online title.
Available to gun totting players right now, The Dark Room is built out with the same seemingly retro textures and palette as the original Quake. Layers thrown back in time will find themselves grabbing the same weapons they did back in the old times, just as graphics cards were emerging with entire MB of RAM. Players can pick up legacy weapon skins, alongside the following customizations too:
TRAILBLAZER Tri-bolt — Classic Quake Legacy Grenade Launcher
LAST-RITUAL Super Nailgun — Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge of Armagon Laser Cannon
REAPER Railgun — Classic Quake “Legacy” Railgun—Ranger’s Quake third-person World View Weapon Model!
QCON 2021 Gauntlet — This commemorative gauntlet will be available during QuakeCon 2021!
CHROME SHADERS for all Champions — Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Silver, and Black
PINK Champion Shaders — One for each Champion
PINK Weapon Shaders — One for each weapon that has color shaders
This isn’t the only update Quake Champions is getting. The news of a new map is accompanied by details of a huge summer update, including new NVIDIA Reflex low latency modes, a streamer mode designed to maintain a stream’s fps, and an arsenal of in game bug fixes. You can check out more about The Dark Room and the new summer updates over at the official Quake Champions website now.
