Remedy games and Tencent are working on a free-to-play PvE shooter according to a recent earnings report.

As part of an earnings call Remedy games, the team behind Control and Alan Wake confirmed that the Finnish outfit is partnering with Chinese giant, Tencent to build a new co-op shooter with an eye on worldwide domination. Titled Vanguard, the upcoming adventure isn’t completely new./ Remedy has made no secret of this project in the past, but the news that Tencent is on board is a twist.

Tencent will largely get involved with localization and distribution in specific territories. While the exact locations haven’t been identified, we assume that means markets where Tencent has experience already. Among other areas of the world, Remedy will take the reins with Vanguard. This also confirms that we can expect a mobile version of Vanguard too, with Remedy having licensed the worldwide rights to develop and publish a mobile version of the game to Tencent.

“Vanguard marks Remedy’s first entry into Games-as-a-Service business model, executed by our top tier team of free-to-play experts. We are building something new and exciting for cooperative multiplayer space, on top of Remedy’s strengths. Expanding our capabilities to take on publishing responsibilities is the next step in the development of our company. We are excited for this long-term partnership with Tencent and with confidence can say that it is an excellent fit in supporting Vanguard’s ambitious plans. Vanguard is a global opportunity, and Tencent can support Remedy internationally, and lead the operations in Asia and the mobile markets.” Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment.

For those that haven’t heard of Vanguard yet, don’t worry. While Remedy started work on this game as a service shooter some time ago, it is still in proof of concept stage and unlikely to see any serious previews any time soon. In the meantime, there are plenty of other updates to look forward to from Remedy. The studio is beavering away on a multiplayer spin-off for Control and announced Alan Wake 2 of late.
