Rockstar Peeks Into the Futures of Red Dead Online & GTA Online

Rockstar Games - July 2022 Update

Rockstar developers have posted a lengthy blog article providing players with a peek into the future of two of its signature titles: GTA Online and Red Dead Online. The teams behind each game shine the spotlight on what is coming this summer and beyond as they lay out the plans for the future.

Grand Theft Auto Online

  • a large update will be deployed in a few weeks that expands the Criminal Careers of Executive, Biker, Gunrunner, and Nightclub Owner
  • a new set of Contact Missions will offer an opportunity to become an IAA field operative to investigate criminal conspiracies
  • new community-requested improvements will be included. The team is committed to incorporating player feedback moving forward
  • increased GTA$ payouts will reward players for their time no matter what they’re playing
  • Bodyguards, Associates, and MC Members will see increased payouts to encourage and reward co-op play
  • more specially-curated seasonal events will be added with additional bonuses and gifts, community challenges, and “other surprises”

Red Dead Online

  • The team will continue to showcase Specialist Roles, story-based co-op missions, Showdown Modes, and more
  • changes to enhance and maintain a “healthy environment”
  • plans are underway to build on existing modes
  • new Telegram Missions are coming this year

But this is perhaps the most interesting piece of the blog with regard to RDO:

Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.

RDO players have expressed disappointment with the game and content updates over the past year. With the news that it is effectively entering “maintenance mode” to better facilitate the development of GTA VI, some players will be holding “funerals” for the game and many have expressed deep disappointment.

At the end of the day, I still feel like what bothers me most is simply the potential of what could have been even though there are a lot of amazing things to do in RDO. I probably say this because I was a day 1 beta player. I haven’t played much in the last year due to lack of updates but always held out that they would add more in between other projects.
