If you are like me and love real-time strategy games then you are always looking for the next big thing. We have Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, Star Wars: Empire at War, and now a promising new title from feneq, Rogue Command. How does it stack up against the rest? Find out in our preview below.
Rogue Command is a simplistic RTS title merged with deckbuilding to increase your unit loadout. It’s an all-out war on an all robot battlefield. In each mission, you have to defeat the oncoming horde of attacking mechanical forces. It is more of a build-up of your forces quick or become overwhelmed situation when you go through each mission. The important thing to note is the time limit given to defeat the enemies. I have only reached the time limit once, and it caused the enemies to become stunned for a few seconds while I finished them off.
Graphically, Rogue Command is a bit lax on the detail of their characters. It is, as I said, a more simplistic approach to the RTS genre. With titles that are as detailed as Age of Empires or even Empire at War, there is more appeal for graphics that look great. The user interface is relatively simple to understand and use and the terrain and everything else look fine for the time being. We will see if any of this changes down the road during the rest of its early access.
One item that I love in RTS titles is the multiplayer and co-op modes. Almost anyone I play these types of games with is in the same general consensus most times. Rogue Command will not have a multiplayer or co-op mode, however. This is sad to hear because I do feel that it has great potential but what is the replay-ability without those modes? I mean it may turn out to be a great single-player experience, but while people may pay for a game such as this there are others who may look at it and not want to spend the money. Each person has to decide for themselves.
Overall, I enjoyed the first few levels in Rogue Command but then it got very difficult to progress because of how the AI just pumps tons of forces at you all at once without any time to fight back. It is a simplistic RTS with no future in co-op or multiplayer and is currently in early access on steam. Download the demo free now and choose for yourself.
