Beyond Galaxyland, a lovingly crafted and mildly eccentric sci-fi adventure blasts off today on PC and console
A gun totting hamster, delightfully chirpy android, conspicuous wildlife, a homeless human, and not an intergalactic highway in sight. Today Beyond Galaxyland brings its own madcap mix of old school game and pop culture influence together to the apocalypse. Available now on PC, PlayStation5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, this retro looking adventure plunges players into an interplanetary turn-based RPG from the 1990s with plenty of charm to make you forget that Earth just got steamrolled.
Brought to life by music producer-turned-game developer, Sam ‘EnrightBeats’ Enright, the new space faring escapade follows game follows Doug, a highschooler whisked away to the appropriately named Galaxyland. Snatched off Earth with his pet guinea pig, tis pair are now without a home. Earth came to an abrupt end just as they landed, and said rodent was forcibly evolved. Now, the only thing to do is to embrace the situation and try to find a way to reverse the apocalypse.
Beyond Galaxyland first popped up on our scanner at Gamescom 2024 and I loved it. It took developer Sam Enright a solid six years to put together, and if the demo is anything to go by, it’s a witty mix of ideas.
Sam Enright, creator of Beyond Galaxyland, said: “It has been an incredible, personal journey for me over the past six years – and I cannot believe that Doug and Boom Boom’s story is finally out there for people to enjoy. It’s a heartfelt homage to some of the best childhood memories I have, of playing seminal RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII and watching iconic sci-fi like Star Wars and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I really hope people enjoy this story set across the stars, and they find success in helping get Doug back home to a saved Earth.”
Along the way, players will experience a medley of side scrolling puzzles, strategic turn-based battles, eccentric aliens, epic boss fights, and interplanetary expeditions. Also, a little bit of wildlife photography. A quirky bit of writing and a retro look all make it as odd and utterly charming as it sounds. Whether you remember the 1990s or are more likely to see the 2090s, Beyond Galaxyland is available today. Check out more on the official website.
