Sony’s PlayStation technical presentation confirmed the PlayStation 5 Pro is real.
Sony’s 9-minute technical presentation came and went today in a blaze. In that short window , Mark Cerny, Ps5 Lead Architect, appeared on screen to confirm that the PlayStation 5 Pro is coming. The widely expected upgrade to Sony’s current PlayStation 5 console is set to usher an iteration on existing systems, giving players and developers access to more CPU, More GPU, and a hefty price tag.
Technical Jargon
Rather than remake the current crop of consoles, the new take on the PlayStation 5 will bring a host of upgrades to existing gaming platforms from the Japanese console giant, including:
– GPU Upgrade: 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the PS5.
– Advanced Ray Tracing: Provides 2x-3x faster reflection and refraction of light.
– AI-Driven Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution enhances image clarity with machine learning.
– Game Boost for Backward Compatibility: Applies to over 8,500 PS4 and PS5 titles.
While hardware like memory bandwidth, CPU speed, even Wi-Fi 7 will support enhanced version of existing games, the most interesting leap forward is the inclusion of custom machine learning hardware and an AI library that purports to enhance existing games. How that actually plays out is yet to be seen in the wild, but any AI driven upscaling is likely to help with reducing the overall load as developers begin to push the boundaries of this upcoming console.
The PlayStation 5 Pro will hit stores on 7 November 2024 at an MSRP of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY. Check out the full reveal and more about the tech over at the PlayStation blog.
