Sony Perma Bans Fortnite Player For a Meme

Meme

SegmentNext reports an interesting situation that happened with a user named Hamed Jalalie who plays Fortnite through Sony’s PlayStation Network. The man got his account permanently banned for referencing a meme (and inadvertently breaking Code of Conduct).

He had gotten into a squabble with another player who accused him of cheating. The other user threatened to report Hamad directly to Epic Games and ban him. In return, Hamed Jalalie jokingly answered: “my dad works at Sony he will get u banned” as a reference to an older meme. The company, however, has not found the incident funny and instead delivered Jalalie a perma ban.

Hamed Jalalie reached out to SegmentNext and provided them with the email he received from Sony:

We are writing to inform you that your account has been permanently banned. We have made this decision based on your online activity in the message.

Pretending to be, or by association able to influence, an employee of Sony, its affiliates or 3rd party partners is against our code of conduct.

You will no longer be able to access online multiplayer, PlayStation Store and other network features. Your account will not be reinstated at any point.

We take the decision to ban an account very seriously, and we only do so after one of our moderators has carefully analyzed the situation. PlayStation Support, therefore, can not overturn this moderation decision.

Your sincerely, SIEE moderation
Sony Interactive Entertainment
