Sony says the PS4 is ‘nearing the end of its lifecycle’

PS5

It seems that the “PS5” rumors may be more than rumor soon, as Sony’s CEO says the PS4 is nearing the end of its lifecycle. The sharp-eyed folks at Gematsu caught the news first. Sony also noted that the PSVR is healthy, but that growth is slower than expected, something true of all VR, we’d expect. I wouldn’t go looking for a PS5 announcement at this E3, as it seems that the plan is to focus on existing first party IP through around 2020/21.

PlayStation 4 is entering the final phase of its life cycle, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera said at Sony Investor Relations Day 2018 in Tokyo today. The platform first launched in North America and Europe in November 2013, followed by Japan in February 2014. It has shipped 79 million units as of March 31, 2018.

  1. Does this mean I should just buy all future games on my XBox One? 😀
