Mossmouth has announced that the multiplayer component of Spelunky 2 is finally making its way to PC via Steam after being delayed for several months. The new gameplay mode is in open beta testing and it appears from the developer notes that matchmaking is now working correctly and that other improvements made in closed beta testing over the last several months are paying off.
There are still issues, however, though one has to expect that such things happen during beta testing. Developers are tracking down a bug that players can’t find their friends unless they happen to be matched up together.
The bad news was that invites seemed to be broken for quite a few players, forcing them to try and find friends through matchmaking! This did not come up at all during the closed beta, and we suspected that the addition of multiple servers in preparation for the (much larger, more global) public beta might be related to the issue. Reproducing these kinds of bugs can be tricky, but thankfully we were able to find a case of the bug to test and then put out a patch that seems to have fixed it for a lot of affected players!
Over the course of open beta testing, devs have plans in mind to address other components of the game including cross-play, QoL improvements, continued work on PS4 multiplayer, Online Arena Mode, alternatives to inviting friends added in the future, additional server support, other multiplayer options.
