Development Retrospective for classic StarCraft

Starcraft Retrospective

Blizzard has published a new retrospective blog post on the StarCraft community site. It takes a look back at 1997  when a “ragtag bunch of twenty-something friends” worked on a sci-fi game. One improvisation after another, StarCraft was born.

StarCraft – Development Retrospective

The team didn’t ask questions like “Hey, can we re-do this?”. Instead, they pressed on, putting things in and not going back on it.  The design for the structures came quickly: square and clunky Terran buildings, elegant and rounded Protoss architecture as well as triangular and spiky (and also very organic!) Zerg.

Samwise Didier, an artist at Blizzard Entertainment, remembers:

When we made these races, we just threw a bunch of crap at the wall and saw what stuck, We knew that our Terrans were going to be rough and dirty. We knew we wanted the Protoss to be—not savage, exactly, but primal, and powerful. And we knew we wanted the Zerg to swarm.
