Steam launches its spiffy new look

Steam Update

As of yesterday, the Steam client has a swanky new look thanks to yesterday’s major overhaul of the entire UI. The new interface launched out of beta testing and users can update the client to try out the new digs.

On launch, players will find a new landing page that provides a quick look at recently played games, recently applied game updates, information about what friends are playing, and a look at their entire collection. Along one side are all owned games with larger game icons on the larger frame of the interface. The games list can be sorted in a few ways to only display, for instance, installed games, etc.

Several interesting features are also part of the new look:

  • Users can easily access information about which games have been recently updated to allow them “to engage directly with [their] games as they evolve over time”.
  • The Events Feature provides information about “what the update is and why [players] should boot it up to give it a shot”. This is a handy feature as it shows information about titles running in-game events or might not have been played in a while. “Showcasing these updates is valuable to players and also developers. If you’re a dev, it hasn’t been easy to let someone know that you’ve just shipped a big update to your game, especially if they’ve moved on to something else. Now it is. Starting today, developers will have access to all new event creation tools that will feed directly into the new library”.
  • The UI shows what friends have been playing, including which, if any, games that users may also have installed.
