Team17, the usually well-regarded British video games studio, has changed direction and canceled the recently announced MetaWorms FT project.

In a statement last night, Team17 confirmed that it will not be moving any further forward with the newly announced crossover between the Worms franchise owners and Reality Gaming Group. Team17 has confirmed the following

Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.

For those of you that missed the social media reaction from fans, staff, and development studios associated with Team17, the MetaWorms project was announced at the start of the week and was yet another digital art program that was due to incorporate the Worms franchise. Had it gone ahead, we would have seen a set of unique Worms-themed digital art projects tied to the blockchain. While we’re not going to go into the technology behind it, the of NFTs in video gaming is something of a hot topic, with studios including Aggrocrab and Playtonic, making their stance on NFTs very publicly known in response.

Whether that makes any difference to Ubisoft’s Quartz and other Sandbox metaverse projects, we will have to wait and see.
