If you ever wondered quite how popular Terraria is, the seemingly subdued escapist indie just topped 1 Million sales just 3 weeks after release in China.
Going live on the TapTap and iOS App Stores across Mainland China, just a few weeks ago Terraria has proven, once again, that gamers just love a bit of escape. Initially hitting PC and finally making its way over to mobiles back in 2013, this mix of action-adventure and more modern sandbox gameplay is proving something of a hit after its latest release. Publisher 505 Games has confirmed that thanks to local partners X.D an appetite for great games, Terraria has now shifted more than 1 million mobile copies.
“These preliminary results illustrate once again how Terraria truly is a timeless masterpiece in our industry, bringing joy to gamers in Beijing and Shanghai just like in New York and London”, said Raffi Galante, 505 Games Co-CEO and Co-Founder with his brother Rami. “This is a remarkable achievement for Terraria and our company; this confirms once again the importance of a local approach to strategy, publishing operations and game development in China and Asia” he added.
With 32,000 storefront reviews, the success seems inconceivable considering the age of Terraria and its premium price tag in a market that seems to live by the free to play ethos, Terraria seems to stand now, just as much as it did back in 2011, just check out our Nintendo Switch review. The initial launch of Terraria might not be the fully fleshed out experience it is now but you could still head up your own adventure, delving deep into cavernous expanses in search of treasure and raw materials or simply test your mettle in combat. If you are one of the few to have missed Terraria across the last decade then there’s a wealth of options on offer across Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS storefronts here and in China.
