The Final Rebuild of Evangelion Movie Has A Release Date In Japan

It’s finally going to happen. After a protracted wait with little news, the final Rebuild of Evangelion movie looks set to come to Japan.

Titled Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, the final chapter in the Rebuild of Evangelion franchise looks set to arrive in Japanese theatres on 23 January 2021. The wait for this release has been something of an ordeal for fans of the anime franchise. The last update in the series, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo left fans of the seminal anime series hanging back in 2012. After a roughly eight-year interlude those of us who thought the nearest we’d get to “in the robot” was Override 2, can find out exactly how this rebuild resolves.

The news of a Japanese theatrical release also comes with a trailer for the latest entry, but you might want to brush up on your Japanese before watching the full release. The eastern release date for the last of these Evangelion movies does not come with a western release date or even a timeline, although it’s not expected to be quick.

The Rebuild of Evangelion movie series kicked off back in 2007 with what appeared to be a remaster of the original Evangelion series, condensing and remastering much of the content. This turned out to be a very different take on the Evangelion franchise, one of the seminal anime of any generation. If like me, you’ve been waiting patiently, expecting it to end up being vaporware then this is fantastic news. If you’re not up to speed yet then you can check out the original Evangelion series on Netflix right now before catching final Rebuild of Evangelion movie when it arrives on western shores.
