Red Dead Online players with a bent towards the fauna in the game will be happy to hear that the Naturalist is the new Frontier Pursuit just added to Red Dead Online. As the name implies, the Naturalist is an expert in all locations and is working to pursue Legendary Animals. Successful Naturalists will be able to use their knowledge to learn new skills or to bolster resources and material gains.
Players will learn this new Pursuit by visiting Harriet Davenport. She will send budding Naturalists off to track down specimens and will assist her in expanding her knowledge of animals in the five states. The goal is to sedate these critters to obtain samples to return to Harriet and, of course, to be rewarded. Players will use the Sedative Varmint Cartridges and Varmint Rifle to sedate creatures and then use the Animal Reviver to get them back up and running as they should.
At odds with Harriet’s mission to understand and preserve wildlife is the retired big game hunter Gus Macmillan, who will compensate you handsomely for your hunting skills. If your tastes favor fine clothing made from animal hides over the conservation of the natural world, Gus provides a wide range of options from the hauls you deliver. Be warned though, Harriet will take notice of your poaching activities if you try to play both sides of this quarrel.
Naturalists who choose to work with Gus will bring him skins, parts, and hides who will reward players with high-quality clothing and other unique items with special benefits. Players can learn to craft and tailoring skills from Gus to obtain Legendary Animal Coats and other swanky duds.
Players will track down Legendary Animals including Cougars, Foxes, Boars, Beavers, Wolves, Bison, and Elk with more to be added over time. Successful trackers will document their findings in the Animal Field Guide that, as it’s filled out, will grant access to “a range of new items, skills, and gameplay”.
