The Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal And It’s Everything We Already Expected

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal showed off a considered upgrade to a handheld console hit.

Nintendo finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, officially. In a video teaser across official channels, the Japanese gaming giant revealed the follow up to its wildly successful Switch handheld, and the leaks were pretty much spot on. The First look video confirmed that we’ll see a consistent format across both old and new devices, with a central console and two removable controllers. The new system and controllers do vary in several key areas, but the format is more evolution than anything else. A new dock, is also included, but don’t expect these to be backwards compatible with the first Switch.

The new console some slick extra curves on the outside to soften the edges and what’s a definitively bigger screen size. The new screen is reportedly going to be around 8 inches, but Nintendo have only given the public visual comparison. The central unit also includes a port for games, two USB-C ports, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a full-length kickstand. The latest dock also includes a mild redesign of the familiar form, but the JoyCons are the most obvious deviation from the norm.

The latest iteration of these removable controllers seems to include an extra clip-on component that allows them to slide along the deck. General speculation seems to suggest that this will turn out to be some sort of mouse styled configuration. We are likely to find out more during an upcoming Nintendo Direct. While there are tons of rumours around on the internet, gamers will be able to do a deep dive on 2 April 2025. Thankfully, anybody eager to upgrade will be able to play their current Switch games too. According to Nintendo:

Nintendo Switch 2 plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.
Nintendo Switch Online members can continue using the service on Nintendo Switch 2.
