Valve Announces Counter-Strike 2 Coming to PC This Summer

Counter-Strike 2

Valve has surprised millions of fans around the world with its announcement of Counter-Strike 2. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the announcement, however, is that it is coming to PC via Steam in Summer 2023 and is a free upgrade for all players who own CS:GO.

At the moment, a small Limited Test is going on. Players hoping to be included must be aware that Valve chooses players based on several factors. Disappointed fans not chosen to test at this time may have further opportunities down the road.

If you are chosen to participate in the CS2 Limited Test you will receive a notification on the main menu of CS:GO. If you receive an invitation, select “ENROLL” and begin your download. When the download is complete launch CS:GO and select the “Limited Test” option to play the CS2 Limited Test.

Developers provided some key information about ways that CS2 will differ from its predecessor

  • Dynamic Smoke Grenades and Unified Lighting – Smoke grenades will interact with the environment and react to factors like lighting, gunfire, and explosions. Players will find a much more realistic depiction of smoke as it leaks from broken windows, for instance.
  • Sub-tick Updates and Consistent Performance – Moving, shooting, and throwing are equally responsive. Servers will know the exact instant motion begins, a gun is fired, or a grenade is thrown.
  • Maps Overhauled and Source 2 Tools – Every map is being rebuilt from the ground up using Source 2 tools. Classic maps will be available as well as several new maps. The tools will be made available to testers a bit later on.
  • Inventory – CS:GO players need not worry – all items in their current inventory will “seamlessly transition” to CS2 so nothing is lost. The game supports legacy models and finishes as well as hi-res models.
  • Retooled UI and HUD
  • Enhanced Sound Design – This is being done to better reflect the physical environment and be more distinct
