Venerable MMO Anarchy Online Turns 20

Funcom has announced that it is pulling out all the stops for Anarchy Online, one of the oldest MMORPGs still in operation. Originally launched in June 2001, the game was not an immediate hit thanks to more than a few issues. Over time, however, developers got those under control and the game began to fulfill its potential.

To celebrate the AO anniversary, both past and present developers were interviewed for a special video. Viewers can hear from former World Designer Viljar Sommerbakk, former Game Director Craig Morrison, and Funcom’s CEO Rui Casais about the importance of the game to the company, to fans, and to the genre itself.

Craig Morrison said, “I’m so proud to have been part of that legacy. And to get to create this wonderful game and this wonderful place that players have called their home for 20 years,” says Morrison, who worked at Funcom for more than nine years. “Even to this day, as I travel and do conventions, talk to player communities, and meet with gamers and indeed game developers, I am always struck by how well-received the game is and how people have such fond memories.”

The team has also published a terrific retrospective look back at the early days of Anarchy Online. You can see it on the game’s official site.
