A UK University has jsut launched the world’s first Degree in esports coaching, meaning you can stay in school and get into a gaming career, probably.
The University of Portsmouth, situated on the south coast of the UK is now prepared to help anybody eager to break into the back rooms of the gaming arena. In the first course of its kind in the world, the UK education establishment has parented with esports industry body IFoEC, the International Federation of Esports Coaches, to develop a curriculum that sidesteps the spotlight for a different type of esports career.
While names like DWG KIA and Fnatic are synonymous with success in gaming competitions, and the prize pools seem huge, these big names burn out pretty quickly thanks to age. If you’re looking to get into esports and don’t expect to be the next Ronaldo of online soccer, then getting some sort of education is a good bet, and this new qualification includes theory, research, and practical experience to understand how to coach players to peak performance, and creating connections to the sector.
While there’s undoubtedly going to be at least a few LoL matches between classes, it’s yet to be seen whether this BSc (Hons) in Esports Coaching and Performance is a gimmick or the first steps into establishing esports as a profession rather than the gamble many parents will see it as.
