WayForward Drop-kicks River City Girls Trailer

Developer WayForward has just clocked us with a left hook of a trailer for River City Girls and you can check it out before it hits PC and consoles.

Coming out on 5 September, River City Girls is the latest in the long-running River City series of games. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the franchise, the River City series, also known by the Kunio-kun branding, is a line of side-scrolling action games that originated from early arcade and Famicom consoles. The Japanese series has always focused on taking the simple joy of side-scrolling beat-em-ups and this time its the girls turn to kick ass.

Take a look at the River City Girls teaser trailer above and you can see some of the awesome animation which takes clear inspiration from the roots of the Kunio-kun brand. With this bright pixel art style, WayForwrd and Arc System Works has also given the latest title a more modern edge. Throughout the game Kyoko and Misako, two street-tough high-schooler must kick, punch, and grapple their way through the six regions of River City to save their boyfriends. They’ll use a series of combos, counters, throws, and special attacks to chew their way through the malls and arcades of the city while interacting with some of the River City NPCs. There’s even a progression system, gear food, and environmental weapon system to keep things varied.s

I wasn’t expecting this game in any way but between the pedigree of WayForward, the same team behind Shantae, the awesome soundtrack, and the anime aesthetic there is no doubt I’m going to be hitting the mean streets of River City and busting some skulls. River City Girls is coming digitally to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4 on 5 September for $29.99. There will be a physical version coming sometime after that for anybody wanting to keep hold of a copy. You can find out all the detail on this brawler over on the official blog post now.
