What we know about Cyberpunk 2077

With Cyberpunk 2077 E3 presentation over, it is time to gather what we know about Cyberpunk 2077 and sum it up. The events of the game take place in the universe of the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop game, 57 years later. Cyberpunk 2077 is described by the developers as “story-driven, (seamless) open-world RPG of the dark future”.

William Gibson, author of the Neuromancer and a man believed to be one of the fathers of cyberpunk as a genre, didn’t think much of the game.

The game will mostly be using the first-person point of view, switching to different angles during dialogues and cutscenes.

On Reddit, it was revealed that the game will have Day/Night Cycle Weather Algorithms. The team noted that anyone can make it dark and rainy and neony, and wanted to prove that the dark future can be any time of day or night.

Here is the bullet-point list taken from the different Reddit threads and sources and combined into a massive pile:

  • You are V, a cyberpunk, who can be a man or a woman and is voiced. V is an urban mercenary.
  • Full character creation & customization system: different body types, hairstyles, tattoos, makeup, etc. You can also choose a background, and it will affect interactions and gameplay.
  • The game features different stats, including Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Reflexes, Tech and Cool – from the original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop
  • The interface is minimal and not in-your-face
  • Working closely with Mike Pondsmith, aspects of the 2020 rulebook is tied into the game. The characters from Cyberpunk 2020 lore will appear.
  • Fluid class system (you do not choose a class in the beginning)
  • The game features ranged and melee combat. There are 3 main types of weaponry: Power, Tech and Smart (track & follow targets)
  • UI expands during combat — enemies have names, health bars, and what appear to be levels. Damage numbers pop up during combat
  • There’s a bullet-time-like ability that allows you to slow down time.
  • The game features vehicles such as cars and motorcycles. While driving, the PoV is set in the first-person and the UI appears diegetically on the windshield. You might be able to switch PoV into the third-person
  • The developers have described the game as mature experience for the mature audience
  • Similarly to the Witcher, you take missions from NPCs and have dialogue options in conversations.
  • There are two forms of experience, gained from completing core missions and “street cred” from side missions. For example, a specific jacket might raise it by 5%, allowing you access to new places. Street creds allow you to unlock different vendors and “fixers” who give you different jobs to do.
  • Choice and consequence are HUGE. Emphasized that the game is an RPG first and foremost. The story is personalized by players’ choices.
  • Night City – in between SF and LA (fictional city). Inspired by both cities.
  • 6 unique districts in the city. Each area has its own feel on top of the base
  • Exploration is encouraged. The goal is for you to not only engage with the game world, but with its inhabitants.
  • Witcher was horizontally huge, Cyberpunk is vertically huge.
  • You can enter buildings, Mega-Buildings exist as well with multiple floors and multiple areas to explore within a single building.
  • There’s full frontal nudity and you can take people back to your apartment for a one night stand if you fancy it. There will also be long-lasting relationships if this is your cup of tea
  • Your apartment is a set place that fills with all of the clothes and weapons you get, though you don’t have to go there to swap. You’ll be able to get more and different apartments throughout the game.
  • Obstacles have several solutions depending on your skills. For example, V got to a door, but his hacking skill was too low. However, his engineering skill was high enough, so he could open a panel and bypass the door.
  • You use an inhaler to heal.
  • There’s an inspection system lets you look super close at items and learn more about lore.

RPG Site has a Twitter post with more information:

Just saw a extended demo of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay and loving what I saw. First person open world RPG. Very few cutscenes, most everything is experienced from the character’s PoV. The world is completely seamless.

The protagonist, V, has customizable gender, skills, equipment, cosmetics. The choices made during creation are reflected in the world, and affect how characters perceive the player. Lots of cool customizable builds based on skill, equipment, play style.

For instance, a eye augment paired with a wall run implant and arm equipment to anchor to high walls. In the demo shown, the player had previously hacked into the enemy Network and can now latch onto discrete areas to hack and disable weapons remotely.

Another: combining the eye augment with a unique weapon that can shoot through cover along with a bullet-time esqe ability and a skill to ricochet bullets off of walls. The ricochet ability looks like deliberately being able to target enemies around corners, not a passive thing

Kotaku reminds everyone that Ciri from the Witcher has probably visited the world of Cyberpunk 2077.

There are currently speculations that we might see the first glimpse of gameplay at Gamescom
