Why Runescape Developer Jagex Is Publishing An Idle Version Of Its MMO

Melvor Idle

Jagex, the name behind online gaming behemoth Runescape is set to publish the laid back indie adventure Melvor Idle.

Jagex has announced that it is set to publish Melvor Idle, an idea that takes the basic concepts behind online giant Runescape and molds them into an idle adventure. Already available via Steam Early Access and free to try across iOS and Android, it seems this subversive indie take on Runescape is about to get some major platform support.

Just, Why?

You might not already know, but Runescape developer Jagex does more than just make gargantuan MMORPGs. Some years back the self sufficient studio widened its market and got into the publishing game. Over several Runefests, we’ve talked to the team about the steps to provide a unique service to titles like Space Punks, which is building an ever growing online world. Now, it seems the team behind Runespace is set to take an unusual indie clicker under its wing. Melvor Idle will now be the second title on the books at Jagex partners, diversifying the team’s portfolio and you can kind of understand why when you look at Melvor Idle.

Described as a feature-rich, idle / incremental game with a familiar feel, this relaxed RPG incorporates 8 different unique Combat Skills to train, a huge world to explore, 150 different monsters, 16 boss types, dungeons to descend into, over 1000 unique items, offline progression, and a distinctly Runescape feel to the entire adventure.

Brendan Malcolm, Games by Malcs founder and the creator of Melvor Idle, said: “Being able to work with Jagex directly on this has been a dream come true. I never would have imagined when I started development on Melvor Idle back in 2018 that I would eventually receive the support of the very studio that inspired me in the first place. The support this partnership has provided me will not only enable me to reach even more players with Melvor Idle, but will help me really establish Games by Malcs as an up-and-coming studio with an office in Perth, Australia. I can’t wait to work with Jagex on making Melvor Idle an even bigger success than I had hoped for.”

When indie developer and Runescape fan Brendan Malcolm got to building Melvor Idle on the side of his day job we’re pretty sure this wasn’t entirely what he expected. If you love the idea of Melvor Idle as much as Jagex, then you can find out more over on the Steam Store, Apple, or Android storefronts now.
