Will Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Finally be the Video Game Westeros Fans Deserve?

Will Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Finally be the Video Game Westeros Fans Deserve?

Taking the world by storm in April 2011, the Game of Thrones television show was seemingly unstoppable. Even through its distinctly lackluster seventh season, it continued to garner huge audiences. Then, it was cemented as one of the ultimate entertainment letdowns in 2019 with its eighth season. House of the Dragon has helped to earn back some of Westeros’ goodwill on TV since then. Yet, overall, people are generally positive about GoT.

So, with a good 14 years of being a pop culture juggernaut, where are the video games? Telltale Games notoriously created the most impactful of the many GoT gaming outings. This was despite the second season of the graphic adventure being canceled. Around that time, there was a 2012 action RPG from Cyanide that was the most missed. There were also many, many mobile and browser games. Now, we have Game of Thrones: Kingsroad on the way.

Limited Showing from Westeros

You’d assume that such a huge entertainment brand would have a significant presence in video gaming. However, Game of Thrones’ most acclaimed and popular showings have been elsewhere. Easily its most perpetually popular venture beyond books and the TV has been in video slots. At all the best slot sites, as indicated by the new content from bonus.ca, there are branded slots. Among them, Game of Thrones is the best-branded slot.

There are a couple of different versions of the original slot now, owing to its popularity. Featuring the classic soundtrack and house sigils, it’s a very Game of Thrones spinning experience. Another that’s become a huge hit is the A Game of Thrones: The Board Game. Drawing from Risk lets you betray and invade the board of three or six players.

In the video gaming space, the board game’s digital edition, as detailed by dicebreaker.com, might be the best experience. Beyond the online slot and board game, there’s little out there. Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming is HBO-licensed and free but has all the usual maligned trappings of a free PvP MMO. Game of Thrones: Legends also came out last year, but that’s about as much as you can say about the freemium puzzle RPG.

A New Hope from Kings Road?

For the most part, people who enjoy the Game of Thrones show haven’t been able to explore further in video gaming. At The Game Awards 2024 in December, Netmarble provided one of many surprises on the night. They revealed a very cinematic trailer for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad that featured many of the show’s stars. As detailed in the post at netmarble.com, the officially licensed game will be story-driven.

It’ll also be an action-adventure RPG. There is a catch, though: Kingsroad is a mobile game. Gameplay footage is exactly a feature of the game’s trailer. Based on its genre description, one would think of Kingsroad as potentially being a kind of Genshin Impact set in Westeros. The developer’s post promises that players will be able to “experience iconic locations” and “traverse the lands between” to find new stories. Lots of mobile games say something similar.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad doesn’t look to be the expansive, immersive, single-player, story-driven, open-world experience fans are clamoring for. It might be a fine mobile game, but it won’t be the ideal GoT RPG people crave.
