PAX East 2017 Little Nightmares Impressions

Definitely not as cute as Mario...

One of the most interesting games I had a chance to try while at PAX East is a suspense adventure game called Little Nightmares. The main character is a nine year old girl named Six who is trying to find her way out of the Maw, which is inhabited by a collection of hungry creatures who won’t hesitate to kill Six at the first chance they get. These are our PAX East 2017 Little Nightmares Impressions.

One of the first hazards encountered in the demo was a Chef who is wandering around a bloody kitchen cooking… something. The obvious way to get through the kitchen is to sneak through and avoid the notice of the chef who didn’t seem to have any patience for Six’s presence. This is harder than it seemed at first because even items which appear to be “part of the background” are things which can be interacted with. I didn’t realize this at first and bumped into an oven door which of course caused it to slam shut and brought the Chef chasing after Six.

As someone who likes to poke and prod everything which can be done in an area the fact pretty much everything can be interacted with was an engaging surprise. Some things were needed for solving puzzles to progress while others seemed to be there just to play with and mess around with. For example there were a few jars I smashed just to see what would happen.

For the most part the story in Little Nightmares is linear, but there are a few areas where there are multiple ways to progress through and depending on the choices you make might cause things to play out a bit differently. The game as a whole can take between 4 – 8 hours to play depending on how quickly you move through and how much time is spent exploring the surroundings.

Overall I really enjoyed the demo and even though it took me a few minutes to figure out some of the puzzles everything felt pretty intuitive and fun. Thankfully we won’t have long to wait to play the full game because Little Nightmares will be launching on April 28th on PC, XBox One, and PS4.
