Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse Switch Review

Freakpocalypse has only just begun

Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse is part of a hilarious point-and-click trilogy developed by Explosm and Skeleton Crew Studios and published by Serenity Forge. Freakpocalypse is filled with all the adult humor the comics and animated shorts have made it an excellent extension of that universe. Does it hold up to some of the complexities that point and clicks have? Let’s find out this is our  Cyanide and Happiness Freakpocalypse review for Nintendo Switch.

Freak Out

In Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse you play Coop, the town’s most hated kid. When I say most hated I mean everyone, and all Coop wants is a date to the prom. Though there are at least a few people who don’t treat Coop like total crap. The story really started off letting me know Coop’s place in the world as the entire class including the teacher picked fun at him. Now it should be noted I wasn’t aware until I actually finished part 1 that this was a trilogy.

Per point and click fashion there are many things to click on. Most of which just really only offers side dialogue but holds no real importance, so it’s highly possible to take a long while to complete if you are to click on everything. At the same time that will cause one to miss somethings. There are many costume pieces to unlock for the efforts of clicking on objects like the classic arrow through the hat. I also unlocked a few unexpected ones from some sidequests.

Not Bad, Just Funny

While I enjoyed my playthrough I did find myself burning out sometimes from clicking on everything. For wanting to unlock and not miss any side quest I tried not to miss any secrets. I missed tons. Now for how funny the Freakpokalypse is, it has not been without its fair share of issues. Only two real stand-out things that gave me issues in-game.

While playing I ran into a bug or I broke the game. Spoiler warning! During the side quest to get Jimmy condoms when trying to walk out of the store without paying, I was able to get out but the game was stuck. It is not super game-breaking if you save often but it set quite a bit. Another not game-breaking but the funny bug was being able to get a ton of Gritle’s angry letters from her purse.

I thought I would only be able to get one but then saw I could grab something else from her purse. It was another letter, and another letter, and another letter, and another… I grabbed many. Again not a game-breaking bug but definitely a funny one. The only other thing I feel is that it’s too short. I missed out on some trophies but I can’t imagine anything I missed adding a few more hours of playtime.

Overall

Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse is fun and so far not among the difficult kind of point and clicks so far. The story has what some would call adult humor, so it may not be for everyone. As a fan of Cyanide & Happiness, it’s a good start to what looks like it’s going to be a funny story about how the town’s most hated kid somehow ends up saving it and going to prom. It only took about 5 hours to get through it. Could do it even quicker if you are not aiming for completing the side quests. Those are worth it for the lulz it will provide. If you are interested in picking up Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse, it is out right now on Steam and Switch for 10% off at 17.99.

Summary
Cyanide & Happiness Freakpocalypse is a point-and-click adventure with all the great comedy one comes to expect from the comics and animations. The story is great and there are many hidden funny gems to discover and unlock. With great voice acting and dialogue, this is a great opening to what is bound to be a fun trilogy.
