I recently had a chance to have a chat with a few of the developers from Rogue Planet Games who work on PlanetSide 2 and got to talk about the newest addition, The Shattered Warpgate. I was impressed with not only the scope of the update but the fact that a game that was released almost 8 years ago is still alive and well. I left feeling excited about the things to come and this additional direction they had decided to go with PlanetSide 2.
Of the many things The Shattered Warpgate brings to PlanetSide 2; missions that tie to an actual story that you follow along as you get to learn more about the changes affecting Esamir. Its the first time in PlanetSide 2 history that lore was given a front and center spot for players to learn more about as they did various missions in-game. These missions ranged from simple things for those who didn’t want to engage in full-scale combat to ones where you would have to get multiple kills with a class, etc. There would be new ones daily that would give me more chances to earn rewards and learn more. While subscribed players would have access to all missions, free to play players would have some restrictions on how many they could do per day. It was great to see a chance for lore and story shine for a change in a game that has an emphasis on faction-based PVP shooting. I’m looking forward to seeing how this unfolds when it goes live and to see how far the team can push this.
With this story comes a fairly big change to the familiar land of Esamir. A Warpgate has been decimated and with it, the land itself has been torn to pieces. A base once familiar is now broken and half-buried in ice and water and storms rage throughout as lightning strikes down not caring which faction you are as it electrifies you. These changes bring a unique beauty to the land and more hazards as you wage war to claim the various outposts over Esamir. Seeing this unique change and what the dev team wants to bring to the game and the community as a whole was great to see.
Of all the things I saw during this preview event, I think the passion and enthusiasm brought by the Dev team really stood out to me. It was great to hear how much they cared about PlanetSide 2 and its community. As someone who has been playing off and since PlanetSide, it made me happy to hear what they wanted to bring to the game and how recently they had increased the size of their team. I’m looking forward to when The Shattered Warpgate goes live and seeing how the community and myself dive into it and how it changes things in the future.
