Twitch News Round Up: MARCH

For the third month of the year we’re switching up the Twitch news to something a little less impersonal with a focus on what’s caught the attention of this Twitch fan via another favorite platform, Twitter. Top Five Twitch News hype, lets go!

TWITS ON TWITCH

TWITCH LAY OFFS
Competitive gaming consultant Rod Breslau bought the news to Twitter that lay offs were occurring at Twitch rocking the competitive sports world as the roots of who has built the e-sports scene on Twitch was severed. News is still rolling out on who exactly was effected but it is never a good day when we are reminded that their are business decisions that will occur changing your entire live streaming world and fans of Twitch can’t help but feel Amazon could do better than shattering the worlds of those who have supported them so fundamentally via more than a Google Hangout. It’s 2018, lets keep our humanity intact.

LOGAN PAUL CLIMBS ABOARD THE FORTNITE TRAIN

With Ninja dominating media interviews that also put a spotlight on his 500,000 per month Twitch income, following his spotlight with Drake (see below) I wasn’t surprised when Youtuber Logan Paul also took on the spotlight March 18th and without even streaming has amassed 483,631 followers. I have no doubt this is stirring the hornets nest in the Twitch community which still has this comfy, country town, glazed moral vibe that many are staunchly proud of as Twitch still grows. I, myself are no fan of Paul in the slightest but I never knew about him before his disgraceful Japan stunts and will continue not really getting to know him because his style isn’t my cup of Kiwi tea. This is the beauty of having choices of who you can tune into online. On the Twitch ground, he brings more eyes that might lead his followers to finding others to enjoy their viewing lives with, while also encouraging growth for Twitch which I am all for. Whether Paul actually streams or not remains to be scene currently taunting the internet like a Youtuber being a ninja (pun intended) with a predictable “Hey Fortnite, let me show your Twitch streamers how much someone can really earn” attitude.

NINJA AND DRAKE PLAY FORTNITE
Out of the blue internationally renowned rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and entrepreneur Aubrey “Drake” Graham teamed up to play Fortnite with Tyler “Ninja” Blevins in such a casual way no one would have known it was happening if it wasn’t for Twitter blowing up! Yes I tuned in, yes it was fun but did I know who Ninja was before this? No, though I may have watched him before because I thought he was Sodapoppin – they look like brothers or maybe know the same hairdresser? That’s no disrespect to Ninja when you might consider this writer has been an MMORPG player most of her gaming enthusiast life – until very recently. What stood out for me while watching was how chill Drake was, maybe it was the comms delay that lead to matches seeming this way but make no mistake I got girly-giggly every time Drake spoke to a gamer just like you and me! Rollingstone gives us an angle into this amazing encounter that has catapulted Ninja into the spotlight ever since as he broke many records with 628,000 plus viewers. Pretty sure I saw it his 635,000 but maybe I was “fangirling” too hard?!

TWITCH PRIME MAKES IT RAIN INDIE GAMES!
More details on the Twitch blog let us all know that we are in for an Indie Amplifier treat with an incredibly generous selection of Indie games for all Twitch Prime players! Twitch Prime rewards are overflowing!

OVERWATCH vs OVERWHELM
If you are behind on the news you might not know yet that Twitch has bought the rights to stream Overwatch League, so along with token promotions and emotes their are now also special skins because Twitch really, really want you to watch OWL. Do you?

A KIWI BIRDS EYE VIEW ON MARCH

You wouldn’t have guessed at all by those headlines that March was Woman’s History Month would you? Twitch celebrated woman in some genuinely nice ways but Twitch is built by it’s viewers and in March the competitive scene along with Hollywood shone the biggest spotlights on Twitch. I enjoyed tuning in to Ninja’s stream while he ran around with Drake, waiting excitedly like many others for Drake to speak – adoring his chill. The chat was on fire and Ninja was cute restraining his excitement often while also plugging his Twitter and Twitch Prime subs with some deliberate boyishness. I sat their scanning Twitter, skimming over Twitch chat giggling at the meme’s and “Gods Plan.” It was a good night for games and gamers.

What I don’t agree with though is that he is now the best streamer based on this night alone. Having a Hollywood star on your stream simply cannot be compared to the likes of Drdisrespect who held the prior record of 380,000 for consecutive viewers by an independent streamer. Ninja couldn’t do that without Drake, so it’s Drake that wins not Ninja. The question remaining now is, would Logan Paul beat them both on his own? For me personally I am curious what Drdisrespect will do as he continues to grow back into the second phase of his Twitch career. Can he continue to dominate or is everyone convinced that no one can make mistakes on the internet if they wish to make money off it? We, will see.
