Chief Product Officer Marc Merrill also known as Riot Tryndamere has taken to X (previously Twitter) to provide players with an update on the state of Riot MMO. Don’t worry, it wasn’t cancelled or frozen, and the developers are still working on it.
Marc Merrill thanked the community for their patience and incredible support so far. After a lot of reflection and discussion, the team decided to reset the direction of the project. This decision was not easy, but the developers believe it was necessary.
“We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre.”
This new direction is a huge challenge, and Riot also introduced the new Executive Producer of the MMO that will see it happen: Fabrice Condominas. Resetting the development also means that the game and the team will be “going dark”, likely for several years. It will help provide space for the team to focus on the work ahead of them.
