Bungie developers have delivered a massive update about the future of Destiny 2. First, the team revealed The Final Shape, the last large-scale expansion for Bungie’s signature game. The War of Light and Darkness is coming to a close. Players will experience the end of the ten-year story arc starting February 27, 2024.
The story pits players against the ultimate big bad in the D2 universe: The Witness. They will travel to the Traveler to bring the war to an end once and for all. However, the journey will not be undertaken without the assistance of some of the game’s most iconic characters. These include Ikora Rey, Commander Zavala, and even Cayde-6. The latter is interesting since he died a few expansions ago. How he’s brought back may well be one of the expansion’s most compelling stories.
During the campaign of The Final Shape, Guardians will explore a mysterious new destination – The Pale Heart, located inside the Traveler. Shaped by The Witness but also influenced by the history and journey of the Guardians themselves, The Pale Heart destination will feature nostalgic callbacks from throughout the history of the Light and Darkness Saga, including a version of the original Tower from Destiny. As the first linear destination in Destiny history, The Pale Heart will also gradually evolve.

Episodic content
The team also revealed that this is the final large-scale expansion before heading to episodic content that will roll out three times a year. These “Episodes” will begin in March 2024 with the first called Echoes, followed by Revenant and Heresy throughout the balance of the year. According to the team, these three Episodes will deal with the expansion’s aftermath and will offer players more rewards and content than previous seasonal content.
Season of the Witch
Lastly, the team laid out plans for Season of the Witch where Guardians will continue pursuing The Witness and “will confront old allies and enemies along the way.” Guardians will find the Deck of Whispers as a new progression method allowing them to customize their loadouts in ways never before. Players earn cards by completing seasonal content. These are then used to build a deck of buffs and perks for “certain activities.”
