Activision Shelves Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 Remasters After Absorbing Vicarious Visions

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2

During a recent livestream with andyTHPS, Tony Hawk, professional skateboarder and game bannerman extraordinaire, revealed that when Activision absorbed Vicarious Visions, the plans for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 were shelved. Originally, Activision had planned to release 3+4 after the successful release of 1+2 but those plans were canned after the merger.

Here’s what was said:

andyTHPS: If there’s a [remastered version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater] 3 and 4 or whatever, you know how to reach me.

Tony Hawk: Yeah, I mean, that was the plan. Even up until the release date of this [Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2], we were going 3 and 4. And then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and then they were looking for other developers, and then it was over.

andyTHPS: Did Activision just not have faith in it?

Hawk: They were actually—I mean, the truth of it is they were trying to find someone to do 3 and 4, but they just didn’t trust anyone the way that they did Vicarious. So they took other pitches from other studios. Like what would you do with the [Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater] title? And they didn’t like anything they heard. And then that was it. I wish there was some way to bring it back. I mean, who knows? Maybe when all the dust settles, we’ll figure it out.

It’s a shame that Activision couldn’t come up with a solution to get 3+4 out the door, particularly after the success of 1+2. In fact, our recent review handed the remaster of the first two games a whopping 9/10.

We said, “It is pretty clear to me that Activision wanted to make the purest remaster that they could while still bringing the quality of life changes that everyone deserved in 2020. In my personal opinion, this is the best title of the year, especially with the fact that I can play it at a constant 60FPS with my 2700x and 2080 and it is as smooth as butter. There are fast load times and even smoother bail transitions which allow you to get right back into the action faster. For 40.00 USD you can’t go wrong with two blockbuster games in one and we did purchase this one on our own to prove it.”
