Microsoft has announced that Age of Empires II Definitive Edition will be expanding on October 31st with The Mountain Royals. The expansion costs $14.99 and brings two new factions on board as well as three new campaigns. The expansion also brings a free update that tweaks Persia with new abilities, appearances, and content. In short, there is something to love for everyone on PC and Xbox.
The Mountain Royals
Prepare to embark on a legendary journey as we introduce the “The Mountain Royals” DLC for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Unlock the rich history and untold stories of two remarkable civilizations, the Armenians and Georgians, and immerse yourself in three captivating new campaigns: Tamar, Thoros the Great, and Ismail.
- The Armenians – Players will rebuild an ancestral kingdom in the mountains. Unique units include the Composite Bowman and the Warrior Priest.
- The Georgians – Players will create their civilization near the Caucasus Mountains and use the difficult terrain to repel foreign invasions. Its unique unit is the Monaspa, a “brawny cavalry unit whose strength increases in numbers.”
- New Campaigns
- Tamar’s Ascension – Tamar ascends her great-grandfather’s throne with big dreams to grow her kingdom. But power isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and she must learn to overcome her skeptics and leave an imprint that will survive the test of time.
- Thoros the Great – In a tiny kingdom called Cilician Armenia, Prince Thoros escapes imprisonment. He is on a mission to take back his homeland and take down the Byzantines and the Seljuk Turks as well as a ruthless Frankish crusader. It is not a job for the faint of heart.
- Ismail – He leads the Safavid Order through Persia. His mission is to lay the foundation for one of the Islamic World’s most illustrious empires.
Free Persian Rework Update
- New Unit – The Savar, a cavalier unit similar to the Paladin, but more specialized in defeating ranged units.
- New Unit – The War Elephant now has a significant movement speed increase and deals a significant damage bonus against buildings.
- Parthian Tactics – Players can research these tactics in the Castle Age and have it provide a large spike to the strength of Cavalry Archers.
