Announcing the Gamespace Game of the Year 2022

The Gamespace Game of the Year 2022 has been 12 months in the making. After a year of Zero Dawns and Dragonflight’s, it’s time for us to pick through the last few days of the year and find out which video game stands above all others in an epic ascent to greatness.

Gamespace Game of The Year 2022 is Elden Ring

Teased as far back as E3 2019 and hyped all the way to its February 2022 release, this vast open world feature draws on the imaginations of Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin to craft an adventure that amazed us on its debut. Taking the path well worn by souls style classics like Bloodborne and Demon Souls, Elden Ring creates an entirely broken world, ready to be rebuilt. Across ancient ruins and perilous sands, players tumbling into the world as a nameless Tarnished must search for and defeat a cluster of powerful beings to reforge the Elden Ring.

This might seem like the sort of description that could easily be trotted out and used in the marketing blurb for any Souls-like, but Elden Ring turned out to be an absolutely stunning example of the genre. Huge complex dungeons filled with powerful enemies, and incredible freedom to fight, loot, and forge your own playstyle enthralled us when we reviewed this masterpiece. Quite simply put, Elden Ring is a masterpiece that I probably underscored at 9/10 in our review.

Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons

While it didn’t manage to take down Melina, Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons finally broke the cycle of destruction and rebirth plaguing Tyria. The latest expansion in ArenaNet’s main MMORPG franchise hit screens back in early 2022 and went on to blow us away. After years of build up and fan demands, this fantasy dragon battle returned to a fan favorite location. The isle kingdom of Cantha is far more than just another backdrop for more pocket raptors and big bads to hang out in. The mix of industrialized magic and new ideas introduced a swathe of additional classes, the always cute Jade Bot, fishing, and Skiffs to an epic story. While WoW: Dragonflgiht has just managed to get flying mounts in game, this incredible addition to the MMO space is definitely worth a look if you’ve got some time on your hands this month.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West

Another sequel made a noticeable impact on our entries this year, too. Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West set out to save the world again on 18 February 2022. Guerrilla Games PlayStation exclusive follows up from the acclaimed original, grabbing a strong score of 9/10, and finds the world on the brink of another catastrophe. The balance between nature and machines is falling out of synch as a rot creeps across the land. The threat to the ecosystem is so great that an older and more experienced Aloy must venture out into new territory to find the source of this problem.

What unfolds is a massive adventure full of new skills, enemies, challenges, and plenty of the same gameplay that made the original so loved. If you’ve never overridden a machine or collected shards then it’s a great season to pick up both the HZD titles. Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West is available now on PlayStation platforms.
